Are you looking forward to getting back on the road and to the UK? Yes, actually. Most of the time I prefer to be at home with my friends, it's just my personality, I don't really like to travel, but I love playing in the UK so it's always worth it. I'm looking forward to a good time. The UK seems to be a regular spot to tour. Will you be venturing into Europe as time goes on? As time goes on we will probably be ventuing everywhere. There has been a lot of talk going around about Japan but nothing confirmed, and with our schedule I would be willing to bet that it will be after we record the next album. But, um, long story short, yes we will tour the rest of Europe, but I don't know when. Are you happy that your fan base is growing by the dozen in the UK? The abilty for the UK to grasp unique music is astonishing and I have nothing but appreciation for the people over there. You have treated your fans to new material (wolves), do you plan on playing anymore? Because of our stage setup it is hard for us to integrate new songs into the set before the album is recorded because most of the programming and loops have to be finished, but we still try to have a few new things for people every time. Along with Wolves we have also been playing a song called Red Museum that will be on the next album and another, yet to be named, song. You have mentioned you have been recording while on the road. Do you have any idea when you’ll be heading back to the studio? I don't know for sure but I believe we will seriously start fixing up songs in April. We have a lot of ideas to work with so it should be pretty awesome. A lot of people are impressed by the fact you two wrote the whole album between you, how much musical experience have you got? Do you think things would have been different if you were a regular four or five-piece band? I started playing the piano when I was three, taking lessons every week, and I did that for about ten years, I think. I started programming eletronic stuff when I was twelve and I was teaching myself to record with ProTools at the same time, that is also about the time that I picked up the guitar and me and Mike got into our first band. Mike has been singing his whole life. Each song can be freely interpreted by listeners, where do you get the inspiration and ideas for songs? Lyrically, Strange We Should Meet Here is a concept album that is based on a story that Mike and I came up with. The whole thing is a metaphor, of course, but the story itself is fictional and is based on fictional characters, and the influences for that came from all over, from books, from movies, whatever. Musically, we are influenced by pertty much every kind of music there is. It has actually been quite a while since I have listened to anything that could be considered "hardcore" or "electronic" at all, mainly singer/songwriting types like Donovan or Bob Dylan or Nick Drake, or listening to R&B, or maybe just Huey Lewis and the News. Can we expect something new and unique as time goes by similar to Strange We Should Meet Here? The next album has a lot of things that are similar to Strange, as well as a some completely new ideas. Over all, I would say that there is much more variation of tempo. Most of the songs are either super heavy, slower songs or they are much more upbeat, like Sparkplug off of strange. I think that guitar wise I have been talking some of the more "post rock" kind of ideas on Strange and making them much more traditionally "post rock." Mikes vocals are definantly drawing on some straight up, late ninties R&B type stuff too, which is awesome. How do you feel about the predictions that you will be a big name in 2006 in the music industry? I have no idea how I feel about them. I guess I try not to think about it. Is there anyone you would like to thank/ Give shout outs to? Stu, for making an awesome website and Randy Newman for writing "Short People." |
